BERKELEY - The No. 12 California men's tennis team (9-5, 1-1 Pac-10) ended up on the short end of a 4-1 decision to No. 3 USC (16-2, 2-0) at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Sat., Mar. 26. Junior Nick Andrews posted the only point for the Golden Bears in a three-set win over No. 24-ranked Daniel Nguyen, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, at court three.
Due to a delay because of inclement court conditions and the possibility of further rain, the teams agreed to play singles matches first.
In a marquee matchup at the top court, No.15-ranked senior Pedro Zerbini faced the nation's top-rated player in Steve Johnson. The duo traded barbs in the first set, but Johnson earned a break to take a 6-3 win before he blanked Zerbini in the second, 6-0, to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead in the match.
USC went ahead, 2-0, when No. 53 Ray Sarmiento took out No. 119-ranked sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 4 singles, and claimed a 3-0 lead as Emilio Gomez edged freshman Ben McLachlan, 7-6, 7-5, at court five with a 7-4 score in the first-set tiebreaker.
Andrews put the Bears on the board with his three-set win over Nguyen at court three, but the Trojans closed the books when Michael Grant secured a three-set win, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, over senior Bozhidar Katsarov at court six. With the match decided, play was suspended without a result at court two. No. 69-ranked Carlos Cueto won his first set against No. 41 Jaak Poldma, but was edged in the second set, 7-5. Poldma held a 2-1 lead in the third when play was suspended.
