LOS ANGELES - No. 4-ranked California women's tennis junior Jana Juricova extended her winning streak to 15 and stayed undefeated (15-0) in dual singles matches with a thrilling three-set win, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, over top-ranked Maria Sanchez of USC to help the No. 10 Golden Bears (12-4, 3-0 Pac-10) claim a 5-2 win over the No. 13 Women of Troy at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium on Fri., Mar. 25.
Juricova's win avenged a three-set loss to Sanchez in the finals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships on Nov. 7, 2010; one of just three losses she has suffered this season. The win also snapped a 22-match winning streak that Sanchez had held since the fall of 2010. Juricova has now defeated the top-ranked singles player in the nation twice in the last five matches. She also took out Stanford's Hilary Barte when she was ranked No. 1 on Mar. 5.
Though the Bears prevailed in the end, the Trojans had the upper hand first. Sophomore Annie Goransson and freshman Anett Shutting posted an impressive 8-1 win over the 11th-ranked tandem of Valeria Pulido and Alison Ramos at court two. But USC had other plans in mind. Lyndsay Kinstler and Danielle Lao evened the score for the doubles point with an 8-2 win over sophomore Tayler Davis and freshman Alice Duranteau at court three.
USC secured the doubles point when its No. 7-ranked team of Kaitlyn Christian and Sanchez upended Cal's third-ranked team of senior Mari Andersson and Juricova, 8-5, at the top court to hand the Cal duo just its fourth loss of the year.
The Bears wasted no time responding to USC's attack and drew a one-all tie on a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ramos by No. 48-ranked Davis at court five. The Trojans fired back and went ahead, 2-1, as Christian defeated No. 57 Goransson, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 3 singles, but Cal pulled into a two-all tie as Schutting put away Pulido, 6-4, 6-4, at court four.
Cal pushed ahead for the first time when senior Marina Cossou came through with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Cristala Andrews at court six, and secured the victory as No. 31-ranked Andersson defeated No. 25 Lao, 6-3, 6-2, at court two. After dropping her first set, 6-2, Juricova battled back to win the second, 6-2, and force a third. This time, Juricova cruised to a 6-1 win over Sanchez to secure Cal's fifth point of the day.
The Bears are back in action against No. 8 UCLA (11-5, 1-1) on Saturday, Mar. 26, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. First serve is set for noon PT. Please visit www.uclabruins.com for links to live scoring.
