BERKELEY - No. 31-ranked California women's tennis senior Mari Andersson registered the dual season's first golden shutout as she posted a bicycle win, 6-0, 6-0, over Magdalena Ploch in singles to go with an 8-0 victory she netted with junior Jana Juricova in doubles. Andersson and Juricova helped the Golden Bears (11-4, 2-0 Pac-10) to a 7-0 win over Hawaii (Hawaii (5-9, 0-0 WAC) on Thursday, Mar. 17, at the Hellman Tennis Complex to snap a three-match losing streak.
Cal swept the doubles courts with impressive play at each position. The Bears' third-ranked tandem of Andersson and Juricova reached 30 wins this season and finished first as it blanked Katarina Poljakova and Barbara Pinterova, 8-0. Cal secured the doubles point at court two as sophomore Annie Goransson and freshman Anett Schutting took out Alyssa Nafarrete and Ploch, 8-2. The Bears completed the sweep when sophomore Tayler Davis and freshman Alice Duranteau defeated Aglae Van den Bergh and Natasha Zorec, 8-3, at court three.
The Bears went up, 2-0, as Schutting knocked off Zorec, 6-1, 6-0, at court four, and raced out to a 3-0 lead when Andersson took out Ploch, 6-0, 6-0, at court two. No. 48-ranked Davis earned her 25th victory of the year and clinched the match for the Bears on her 6-0, 6-2 win over Nafarrete at No. 5 singles.
Senior Marina Cossou made the score, 5-0, for the Bears as she defeated Van den Bergh, 6-3, 6-0, at court six. At the top court, Juricova gave Cal its sixth point of the day with her 6-1, 6-4 win over No. 109 Poljakova to stay undefeated in dual singles matches at 14-0. Goransson completed Cal's 7-0 win with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Pinterova at court three.
The Bears dive back into Pac-10 play next weekend when they head south to take on the Women of Troy and the Bruins. Cal and No. 9 USC (10-4, 1-0) hit the courts for their dual at 1:30 p.m. PT on Friday, Mar. 25, at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium.
