BERKELEY - The No. 5 California men's tennis team (8-4) had its five-match winning streak halted by No. 7 Texas A&M (15-3) in a stunning 6-1 defeat at Hellman Tennis Complex on Wed., Mar. 16. No. 15-ranked senior Pedro Zerbini scored the lone point for the Golden Bears as he recorded his 10th dual singles victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 23-ranked Austin Krajicek on the top court.

The Aggies claimed the doubles point with wins on all three courts. Their No. 53-ranked duo of Alberto Bautista and Colin Hoover came off the courts with an 8-2 win over freshman Ben McLachlan and sophomore Riki McLachlan to give Texas A&M the upper hand.

Though they fought valiantly, junior Nick Andrews and sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt fell, 8-5, to the second-ranked tandem in the nation, Jeff Dadamo and Krajicek, on the top court to surrender the first point of the day. In a heated battle on the middle court, junior Tommie Murphy and Zerbini were edged, 8-6, by the No. 63-ranked team of Alexey Grigorov and Junior Ore.

The Aggies took a 2-0 lead in the match as No. 62 Dadamo completed a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 69-ranked sophomore Carlos Cueto at court two. Zerbini gave the Bears life as he secured a point with his straight-set win over Krajicek at the top court.

Texas A&M got its third point from court six when Niall Angus walked away with a 6-4, 6-1 win over senior Bozhidar Katsarorv. One court over, Ben McLachlan stayed close with Bautista, but his Aggie counterpart snagged the points down the stretch in each set to win, 6-4, 6-4, for the match-clinching point.

Though the dual outcome had been decided, battles continued to rage on courts three and four. Andrews was the first off as No. 100 Alexis Klegou earned the edge in both set tiebreakers for a 7-6 score twice; 7-3 each tiebreaker. At court three, No. 119 Konigsfeldt came back from dropping his first set, 6-2, to win the second in a tiebreaker, 7-5. Both Konigsfeldt and Grigorov gave no quarter in the match tiebreaker as they pushed the score to 16-all before Grigorov won two points in a row for the victory.

The Bears remain home to host perennial Pac-10 powers No. 15 UCLA (10-3) and two-time defending NCAA champion No. 3 USC (13-3) at Hellman Tennis Complex next weekend to open league play. The Bears and the Bruins will hit the court at 1:30 p.m. PT on Fri., Mar. 25. Please visit CalBears.com for more information.
