No. 18 Golden Bears Blank Utes, 7-0

BERKELEY - The No. 18-ranked California men's tennis team (3-2) defeated Utah (2-4), 7-0, on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at Hellman Tennis Complex. Junior Sky Lovill earned the clinching point for the Golden Bears with his 6-2, 6-3 win over Brad Weaver at No. 6 singles.

Cal made the first mark with wins on all three doubles courts. Sophomore Carlos Cueto and freshman Ben McLachlan took an 8-3 win over Matt Cowley and Benito Suriano at the second court. At the top court, Cal's team of Lovill and senior Pedro Zerbini clinched the point with an 8-6 win over Devin Lane and Alejandro Mendinilla. With the point clinched, junior Tommie Murphy and sophomore Riki McLachlan took an 8-3 win over Dmytro Mamedov and Weaver.

The Bears went ahead, 2-0, in the match when Zerbini completed a 6-1, 6-2 win over Suriano at the top singles court. Cal continued to push for a 3-0 lead as senior Bozhidar Katsarov won at court four, 6-3, 6-1, over Lane. Lovill's win at court six came next to clinch with win for the Bears.

Ben McLachlan finished his 6-2, 6-4 win over Mendinilla at court three to give Cal its fifth point of the day. At No. 5 singles, No. 120-ranked Riki McLachlan came up with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Cowley for a 6-0 Cal lead. No. 59-ranked Cueto finished off the sweep for the Bears as he took out Mamedov, 7-6, 6-4, with a 7-5 win in the first-set tiebreaker.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 12, as they take on Bay Area rival Stanford in the Big Slam. Cal and the Cardinal take the courts at Hellman Tennis Complex at 1 p.m. PT. Please visit CalBears.com for more information.
