LOS ANGELES - The No. 20-ranked California men's tennis team (5-3) stunned No. 5 UCLA (9-2) as the Golden Bears defeated the Bruins, 5-2, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 26. Senior Bozhidar Katsarov provided the clinching point in a three-set victory (6-7, 6-3, 6-1) over Alex Brigham at No. 6 singles to lift Cal to its first regular-season win in the city of Los Angeles since April 2006.

The Bears had little trouble securing the first point of the day as they won on the top two doubles courts. At No. 2 doubles, senior Pedro Zerbini and junior Tommie Murphy teamed up to take out Adrien Puget and Holden Seguso, 8-4, for the first win of the day. Over on the top court, Cal's No. 21-ranked tandem of junior Nick Andrews and sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt took out Brigham and Amit Inbar, 8-3, to pocket the doubles point for the Bears. On court three, sophomore Riki McLachlan and freshman Ben McLachlan nearly took out Warren Hardie and Daniel Kosakowski, but the pair was edged, 9-7.

The first sets of five singles matches opened up close, with the exception of one. At No. 2 singles, No. 82-ranked sophomore Carlos Cueto made his presence felt in a 6-1, 6-4 victory over No. 84 Inbar to give Cal a quick 2-0 lead. UCLA got on the board with a point from court five as Puget defeated Ben McLachlan in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, but the Bears fought back to put the Bruins on the ropes as No. 41-ranked Zerbini tacked up a 7-6, 6-1 win over No. 63 Kosakowski at the top court.

At court three, No. 95-ranked Konigsfeldt won his first set, 6-3, but Clay Thompson made things difficult for the second-year Bear as he came back to win in three, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, to pull UCLA within a point, 3-2. That was as close as the Bruins would come, however, as Katsarov completed his three-setter against Brigham at court six moments later. With the match decided, the Bears added one more point when Andrews edged No. 87-ranked Maxime Tabatruong in the third set tiebreaker for a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 win.

Cal is back in action next weekend as it heads to San Diego for the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club (March 4-6). Before the Bears break for doubles action, they will face Fresno State in San Diego for a 1 p.m. PT neutral-site dual on Thursday, March 3. Please visit CalBears.com for more information.
