BERKELEY - The sixth-ranked California women's tennis team (9-1, 2-0 Pac-10) tacked up another 7-0 score to defeat Oregon (6-4, 0-2) at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Saturday, Feb. 26. No. 70-ranked senior Mari Andersson provided the clinching point with her 10th straight win at No. 2 singles on a 6-1, 6-2 win over Patricia Skowronski.
The Bears got off to a strong start by snagging the doubles point for the ninth time this year. At court three, senior Marina Cossou and freshman Anett Schutting teamed up for an 8-4 win over Pascale Neubert and Rabea Stuckemann for the first victory of the day.
For the seventh time this season, the doubles point was clinched at the top court by Cal's fifth-ranked duo of Andersson and junior Jana Juricova. The tandem defeated the No. 45-ranked team of Skowronski and Pavlina Smatova, 8-4, for its 13th consecutive victory; 26th overall. At No. 2 doubles, Cal's sophomore duo of Tayler Davis and Annie Goransson fell behind, 5-2, but roared back and took the next six games for an 8-5 win over Trudie du Toit and Julia Metzger to give Cal its second doubles sweep of the year.
The Bears pushed out to a 2-0 lead when Schutting completed a quick 6-1, 6-0 win over Neubert at No. 5 singles. No. 51-ranked Davis forced Oregon's hand as her 6-0, 6-2 win over Stuckemann at court four gave the Bears a 3-0 lead. Andersson grounded the Ducks when she took out Skowronski at court two.
No. 35-ranked Goransson gave Cal a fifth point with her team-high 26th win of the year (13th in a row) as she beat Metzger, 6-2, 6-4, at court three. Freshman Alice Duranteau dropped her first set, 0-6, to Lana Buttner at court six, but responded to complete a three-set victory, 6-3, 6-4, before No. 4-ranked Juricova finished off Cal's 7-0 sweep with a 6-4, 6-2 win (her 10th in a row) over No. 106-ranked Smatova at the top court.
