BERKELEY - The sixth-ranked California women's tennis team (8-1, 1-0 Pac-10) claimed a 7-0 victory as the Golden Bears defeated Washington State (8-4, 0-1 Pac-10) at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Friday, Feb. 25. Cal got wins on all nine courts to sweep the Cougars in its Pac-10 opener. No. 35-ranked sophomore Annie Goransson logged one point for the Bears on her team-high 25th singles win.
Singles matches were played first due to concerns about weather conditions. No. 70-ranked senior Mari Andersson was the first player off the court for Cal as she completed a 6-0, 6-1 win over Liudmila Vasilieva at court two in under an hour. It was Andersson's ninth dual singles victory. No. 51-ranked sophomore Tayler Davis tacked up a second point for the Bears with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Andjela Kankaras at court four to give Cal a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Bears went up, 3-0, on a 6-2, 6-3 win by freshman Anett Schutting. She defeated Olga Musilovich at No. 5 singles. Another freshman came through with the clincher at court six when Alice Duranteau logged a 6-4, 6-1 win against Lea Jansen. Goransson added a fifth point for the Bears with her 6-4, 6-4 win over Ksenia Googe at No. 3 singles. At the top court, No. 4-ranked junior Jana Juricova topped off singles matches with her 6-2, 6-4 win against No. 125 Elisabeth Fournier for Cal's sixth point of the day.
In doubles, Davis and Goransson teamed up to take an 8-1 win over Kankaras at court two before senior Marina Cossou and Schutting came through with an 8-4 win over Fournier and Jansen at court three to clinch the doubles point for the Bears for the eighth time this season. The day ended when Cal's fifth-ranked tandem of Andersson and Juricova won, 8-4, against Musilovich and Vasilieva.
