BERKELEY - No. 41-ranked California men's tennis senior Pedro Zerbini claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alex Konigsfeldt of UC Santa Barbara for his 10th singles victory of the season as he clinched the fourth point in a 7-0 win for the 19th-ranked Golden Bears (4-3) over the No. 60-ranked Gauchos (2-5) on Sunday, Feb. 20, at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
At No. 2 doubles, a pair of Bears gashed the Gauchos for an 8-1 win in just a half hour as junior Tommie Murphy and senior Pedro Zerbini teamed up to take out Mathieu Forget and Benjamin Recknagel. UCSB responded to even the race to the doubles point with a win on court three where Evan Jurgensen and Philip Therp posted an 8-4 win over senior Bozhidar Katsarov and freshman Ben McLachlan.
With the first point of the day resting on the result of the top doubles court, Cal's No. 21-ranked duo of junior Nick Andrews and sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt found itself down, love-30, in the 14th game and down, 7-6, in the match. The Bears fought back and held serve to knot the match at seven before they broke the Gauchos for an 8-7 lead. Andrews' aggressive serving pushed Cal ahead, 30-love, in the final game before the Bears secured the first point of the day with an impressive come-from-behind 9-7 victory.
Cal went up, 2-0, as No. 95-ranked Christoffer Konigsfeldt secured a 6-0, 6-3 win over Recknagel at No. 2 singles, and forged ahead, 3-0, when Andrews sealed a 7-5, 6-3 win against Forget at court three. No. 41-ranked Zerbini had the clinching point at the top court where he defeated Alex Konigsfeldt, 6-3, 6-4.
With the outcome decided, sophomore Riki McLachlan completed a 6-4, 6-1 win over Therp at court six to give Cal a 5-0 lead. Ben McLachlan came off the court at No. 4 singles, next, with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Chavez-Goggin, on a 7-5 decision in the second-set tiebreaker. After winning his first set, 6-2, over Max Glenn at court five, Katsarov found himself down, 4-1, in the second. He fought back, to earn a five-all tie, but fell short, 7-5, as Glenn forced a match tiebreaker. Katsarov stood fast his ground for a 10-7 win in the match tiebreak to complete Cal's 7-0 sweep.
Cal is back in action this weekend when it heads to Los Angeles for matches against USC and UCLA. The Bears and the two-time defending NCAA champion Trojans face off at 1:30 p.m. PT on Friday, Feb. 25, at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium. The team will have to turn around quick and get ready to take on the Bruins in a 1 p.m. PT match on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
