CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The fifth-ranked California women's tennis team (7-1) secured a 4-2 victory over No. 19 Arkansas (8-3) in a consolation match of the 2011 ITA National Indoor Championship at the Boar's Head Tennis Club on Sunday, Feb. 20. The Golden Bears return home to host Washington State and Oregon in Pac-10 duals this weekend (Feb. 25-26).
Cal got the day started in the right direction as senior Marina Cossou and freshman Anett Schutting closed out Jade Frampton and Valentina Starkova, 8-2, at the third doubles court. The Razorbacks replied to get a win at No. 2 doubles when Kate Lukomskaya and Stephanie Roy recorded an 8-4 win over the Bears' sophomore pair of Tayler Davis and Annie Goransson.
For the sixth time this spring, Cal's fifth-ranked tandem of senior Mari Andersson and junior Jana Juricova earned the clinching victory for the doubles point. This time, the Bears claimed their 11th consecutive win, 8-4, over the No. 37-ranked team of Claudine Paulson and Anouk Tigu at the top court to give Cal a 1-0 lead.
Arkansas made its move quickly and tied the match at one-all when Roy took a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over Schutting. Frampton pushed the Razorbacks ahead, 2-1, on her 6-1, 6-2 win over freshman Alice Duranteau at court six.
The Bears tied the match, two-all, when fourth-ranked Juricova turned away No. 16 Tigu, 6-2, 6-0, at the top court, and went ahead, 3-2, on a 6-2, 6-2 victory by No. 70-ranked Andersson at court two over Paulson. Still in action at courts three and four, the Cal sophomores flip-flopped situations. At No. 3 singles, No. 51 Davis dropped her first set, 6-4, to Lukomskaya, but responded to force a third set with a 7-5 win in the second-set tiebreaker. At court four, No. 35-ranked Goransson took out Emily Carbone, 6-0, in the first set, but allowed the Razorback to control the second stanza, 6-4.
Both Bears put on strong showings in their respective third sets, and needed just one more game to seal the team victory with Arkansas holding serve on both courts. Davis was on the verge of earning the break she needed for a 6-4 third-set win, but Goransson came through first, with a 6-2 victory to give Cal a 4-2 win.
Cal returns to Berkeley to host Washington State for a 1:30 p.m. PT dual on Friday, Feb. 25, at Hellman Tennis Complex. Then the Bears turn around to take on Oregon in a noon PT dual on Saturday, Feb. 26. Both matches will count towards Pac-10 standings. Please visit CalBears.com for more information.
