CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The fifth-ranked California women's tennis team (5-1) fell for the first time this season, 4-1, in an upset, to No. 20 Northwestern (5-3) in the first round of the 2011 ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the Boar's Head Tennis Club. The Golden Bears were dismissed from the four-day tournament by the Wildcats for the second year in a row, and the third time in four years. Since its finish as the 2008 runner-up to Georgia Tech, Northwestern has won an impressive nine consecutive matches at the championships and is currently the two-time defending champion. Cal fell in the first round of play at the indoor championships for the first time since 1996

The Bears fired the first shot of the day as their fifth-ranked duo of senior Mari Andersson and junior Jana Juricova posted a strong 8-2 win over Northwestern's 15th-ranked team of Nida Hamilton and Linda Abu Mushrefova at the top court. The Wildcats answered back with an 8-4 win at court three as their 58th-ranked team of Maria Mosolova and Belinda Niu defeated Cal's newly-formed tandem of senior Marina Cossou and freshman Anett Schutting.

The `Cats slammed the door on the race for the doubles point as their 66th-ranked team of Elena Chernyakova and Brittany Wowchuk snapped an eight-match winning streak held by Cal's team of sophomores Tayler Davis and Annie Goransson in an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles.

Tightly contested battles in three singles matches endured through two sets, but Northwestern overpowered Cal at three spots to seal a 4-1 win. Hamilton was the first to get off the courts as she completed a 6-4, 6-1 win over freshman Alice Duranteau at No. 6 singles to put the Wildcats up, 2-0. No. 100-ranked Niu tacked up Northwestern's third point of the day on her 6-3, 6-2 win against No. 51 Davis at court three.

At the top court, fourth-ranked Juricova had battled back after falling, 6-4, in the first set to force a third set with a 6-2 win in the second against No. 29 Mosolova. At court four, No. 35 Goransson claimed a 6-4 win in her first set against No. 98 Kate Turvy, but the Wildcat came away with a 6-0 win in the second set before Goransson seized a 2-1 lead in the third.

No. 70 Andersson posted a point for the Bears as No. 45 Wowchuk retired after trailing, 2-1, in the second set, and one set to none (6-4) at court two. Stacey Lee had the match-clinching point for the `Cats as she defeated Schutting, 6-2, 6-0, at court five for the 4-1 win. Play was suspended at courts one and four after Lee's win.

Cal will face No. 13 Georgia Tech (4-2) in a consolation match on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m. ET (4:30 p.m. PT). Live scoring is available courtesy of host institution University of Virginia at www.virginiasports.com.
