SAN DIEGO - The fifth-ranked California women's tennis team (5-0) claimed a 6-1 win over No. 60 San Diego State (3-4) on Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Aztec Tennis Center. Sophomore Annie Goransson secured the victory for the Golden Bears with her 6-0, 7-5 win over Sierra Ellison at the fourth singles court. Goransson leads the team with 22 singles wins this season.
In doubles, Goransson teamed with fellow sophomore Tayler Davis to lock up the duo's 15th win of the year, 8-3, over Emma Cioffi and Julia Trunk at the second court to give Cal the edge for the doubles point. SDSU answered back with an 8-3 win of its own as Olivia Colman and Ellison defeated junior Stephany Chang and freshman Alice Duranteau at court three. Cal's fifth-ranked pair of senior Mari Andersson and junior Jana Juricova clinched the doubles point for the Bears for the fourth consecutive match as they defeated Alicia Aguilar and Julia Wais, 8-4, at the top court.
Cal wasted no time as it made the score, 2-0, with a win at No. 2 singles. There, No. 46-ranked Andersson claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win over Aguilar. The Aztecs fired back and got on the board as Colman defeated Chang, 6-4, 6-1, at court six. The Bears stretched their lead to 3-1 as No. 35-ranked Davis completed a 6-4, 6-3 win over Wais at No. 3 singles.
Goransson's win at court four came next. It was the second time this season that she sealed a win for the Bears. At the top court, No. 1-ranked Juricova had little trouble taking out Trunk, 6-4, 6-2, for her 15th singles win of the year. In the day's only three-setter, Duranteau came back after she dropped her first set and earned a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win against Cioffi at court five.
The Bears head to Charlottesville, Va. for the 2011 USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships next weekend (Feb. 18-21). The University of Virginia will host the four-day indoor event at the Boar's Head Tennis Club. Cal has made two consecutive appearances in the semifinals.
