BERKELEY - The No. 18 California men's tennis team (3-3) fell, 5-2, to No. 8 Stanford (6-0) in the Big Slam at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Saturday, Feb. 12. Next, the Golden Bears will turn their focus to a dual match against UC Santa Barbara before they play at USC and UCLA.

Stanford got the early lead by claiming the doubles point with wins at the first and second courts. The No. 16-ranked pair of Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher defeated Cal's top team of junior Nick Andrews and freshman Ben McLachlan at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. On the third court, the Bears' duo of senior Pedro Zerbini and junior Tommie Murphy bested Denis Lin and Matt Kandath, 8-6, by earning a service break on the final game.

With the doubles point resting on the result of court two, the Cardinal's Alex Clayton and Ted Kelly were just able to get past Cal's tandem of sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt and junior Sky Lovill, 9-8, with a 7-1 score in the tiebreaker. Clayton and Kelly had to fight off a set-point while trailing, 8-7, to push the back-and-forth set to a tiebreak and secure the first point of the day.

Stanford went ahead, 2-0, when Lin triumphed in the second set tiebreak, 7-5, to get the 6-2, 7-6 win over Andrews at No. 4 singles. The Cardinal then pushed its lead to 3-0 as No. 61 Clayton took out No. 50 Konigsfeldt 7-5, 6-2 at court three. Only a minute later, the Bears got their first point of the day when Ben McLachlan finished off his 6-4, 6-1 victory over Greg Hirshman from court five to bring the score to 3-1.

On the top court, Zerbini upended No. 15 Klahn, 7-5, 7-5, to cut the Bears' deficit to 3-2. At court two, No. 59 sophomore Carlos Cueto rallied in the first set after going down 5-1 to No. 41 Thacher and sent the set to a tiebreaker. Thacher held on in a tight tiebreak, 7-4, and got a crucial break in the second set to clinch the win for the Cardinal with his 7-6, 6-4 victory. Another close tiebreak went Stanford's way, 7-4, as Kandath secured the final point for the Cardinal with a 7-6, 7-5 win over Cal's No. 120-ranked sophomore Riki McLachlan.

The Bears will host UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m. PT before they visit USC on Feb. 25. Please visit CalBears.com for more details.
