ASU Thunderbird Invitational Draws 
TEMPE, Ariz. - Top-seeded No. 41-ranked California women's tennis junior Tayler Davis led a quartet of Golden Bears into the quarterfinals of the 17th-annual ASU Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Arizona State at the Whiteman Tennis Center on Friday, Nov. 4. Davis claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kara Cecil of Ohio State and walked over after her second-round opponent withdrew from the tournament.
No. 57-ranked junior Annie Goransson picked up a 6-1, 7-6 win with an 8-6 score in the second-set tiebreaker to get past Leighann Shahagun of Arizona State, in the first round. Goransson pushed through to the quarterfinals on a 6-4, 6-3 win over No. 64-ranked Anastasia Putilina of Utah in the round of 16.
No. 88-ranked sophomore Anett Schutting came up with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Michigan's Kristen Dodge in the her first-round match and completed a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Fresno State's Melissa McQueen in the round of 16. Freshman Zsofi Susanyi defeated Ohio State's Kelsey Haviland, 6-1, 7-5, in the first round, and upended Northwestern's No. 58-ranked Brittany Wowchuk, 6-3, 6-0, in the round of 16 to advance. The win against Wowchuk is Susanyi's fourth, this season, against a ranked player.
After receiving a second-round walk-over, Davis will draw No. 62-ranked Brooke Bolender of Michigan in the quarterfinals. Schutting has a date with No. 115-ranked Michelle Brycki of Arizona State; Goransson matches up against No. 53 Kate Turvy of Northwestern, and Susanyi will take on second-seeded No. 42-ranked Marianne Jodoin of Fresno State. All main draw singles quarterfinal matches begin at 9:30 a.m. PT on Saturday, Nov. 5, with the semifinals set for 12:30 p.m.
Freshman Cecilia Estlander won her first set against Bolender in the round 32, 6-4, but Bolender responded to split the match with a 6-4 win of her own. Bolender advanced with a 6-0 win in the third set. Estlander picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win against Utah's Callie Craig, in the consolation draw, and will face Ohio State's Cecil in a 9:30 a.m. consolation quarterfinal match on Saturday, Nov. 5. Semifinals will begin not before 12:30 p.m.
In singles round-robin matches, senior Stephany Chang took out Northern Arizona's Hannah Stone, 7-5, 6-1; and senior Catalina Visico fell, 6-1, 6-2, to Michigan's Dodge.
In the first round of doubles matches, the Bears earned three victories. Sophomore Alice Duranteau teamed with Susanyi to take out Shahagun and Sianna Simmons of Arizona State, 9-8. Cal's No. 53-ranked team of Goransson and Schutting posted an 8-4 win against Michgan's duo of Mimi Nguyen and Michelle Sulahian; and Davis and Estlander earned an 8-5 win against Ohio State's Fidan Manashirova and Gabby Steele.
