FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - The fourth-seeded and fifth-ranked California men's tennis doubles team of senior Nick Andrews and junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt advanced to the semifinals of the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Friday, Nov. 4. The Golden Bears defeated Valdosta State's tandem of Christian Hansen and Luis Loeffler, 8-4, in the quarterfinals.
Andrews and Konigsfeldt will face Ohio State's second-seeded and third-ranked team of Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola in the semifinal on Saturday, Nov. 5. Of the four seeded teams, only Georgia Tech's No. 1-ranked and top-seeded team of Kevin King and Juan Spir did not advance to the semifinals.
As the only school with a second pair of players in the doubles championship, Cal was also represented by its duo of junior Carlos Cueto and sophomore Ben McLachlan. The Bear tandem won its first-round match, but fell in the round of 16. In their consolation quarterfinal match, Cueto and McLachlan defeated Texas' team of Chris Camillone and David Holiner, 8-3.
Cueto and McLachlan will face Princeton's team of Matt Siow and Matt Spindler in the consolation semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 5. Championship matches in both the main and consolation draws are set for Sunday, Nov. 6.
