PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - No. 1-ranked and top-seeded California women's tennis senior Jana Juricova earned a berth in the round of 16 of the 2011 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Tennis Championships on Thur., Oct. 6, at the Riviera Tennis Club. The Golden Bear defeated No. 25-ranked qualifier Anna Bartenstein of Miami in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1, to advance.
Juricova will face USC freshman Zoe Scandalis in the round of 16 at 10:45 a.m. PT on Friday (Oct. 7). A victory against Scandalis sets Juricova up for a 4:30 p.m. match against the winner of a match between No. 14 Aeriel Ellis of Texas and No. 11 Jacqueline Cako of Arizona State.
Four of the other eight seeded players were not as fortunate as Juricova in their first-round matches. No. 3 Kristy Frilling of Notre Dame was ousted by Baylor's No. 13-ranked Sona Novakova, and fourth-seeded Denise Dy of Washington won her first set, but was taken down by No. 10-ranked Marta Lesniak of SMU. Seventh-seeded Nicole Gibbs of Stanford fell to Beatrice Capra of Duke, and eighth-seeded Josipa Bek of Clemson lost in two close sets to Aeriel Ellis of Texas.
In the first round of the doubles main draw, the 13th-ranked team of Juricova and sophomore Anett Schutting had their run cut short in an 8-4 loss to USC's No. 18-ranked team of Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria.
Due to inclement weather conditions, the final two rounds of doubles qualifying took place to begin the day. Cal's junior tandem of Tayler Davis and Annie Goransson faced UCLA's No. 21-ranked team of Courtney Dolehide and Pamela Montez in a second-round match, but fell, 8-3.
Play continues on Friday (Oct. 7) with doubles matches at 9 a.m. PT. Singles matches are slated for 10:45 a.m., with quarterfinals to be played not before 2:15 p.m. The opening round of consolation singles will start at 12:30 p.m., and the next round is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
