TULSA, Okla. - Members of the California men's tennis team completed their runs in the 2011 ITA Men's All-American Tennis Championships on Thur., Oct. 6, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The Golden Bears had three men among the field of 64 of the singles main draw; No. 26-ranked junior Carlos Cueto, No. 45 senior Nick Andrews, and sophomore Ben McLachlan.
Andrews faced No. 73-ranked James Chaudry of Mississippi State in his first-round match, but was defeated, 6-1, 6-2. Andrews faced another tough opponent in the first round of consolation matches where he fell, 6-2, 6-4 to No. 53 Patrick Kawka of BYU.
In his first-round match, Cueto fell, 6-3, in the first set to No. 85-ranked Kevin King of Georgia Tech, but forced the Yellow Jacket to a second-set tiebreaker before he succumbed, 7-1, to King. Cueto drew No. 36-ranked Louis Cant of Mississippi State in his consolation match, but was turned away, 6-0, 7-5.
McLachlan had the tallest task as he went up against fourth-seeded and No. 5-ranked Chase Buchanan of Ohio State in the first round. Though Buchanan won his first set, 7-5, McLachlan replied to take a 6-2 win in the second. Buchanan proved to be too much in the third set as he walked away with a 6-0 win. McLachlan went up against No. 19 Finn Tearney of Pepperdine in his consolation match where he fell, 6-4, 6-2.
In the first round of doubles matches, Cal's fifth-seeded and No. 5-ranked team of Andrews and junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt locked up with Grant Ive and Tristan Jackson of Tulsa, but the Golden Hurricanes fended off the Bears for an 8-5 win. Cueto and McLachlan faced Georgia's 17th-ranked tandem of Sadio Doumbia and Ignacio Taboada in their first-round match, but were turned away, 8-4.
