TULSA, Okla. - California men's tennis sophomore Ben McLachlan continued his run at the 2011 ITA Men's All-American Tennis Championship's qualifying tournament in a straight-set victory over Johan Backstrom of Mississippi on Tue., Oct. 4, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. McLachlan picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win in the second round to move on.
McLachlan needs one more win to earn a spot in the main draw. Vitor Manzini of Texas Tech stands in the way in the third and final round where the two will meet in an 8 a.m. CT match on Wed., Oct. 5. Manzini took out No. 87-ranked Niall Angus of Texas A&M in the second round with a 7-6(9), 7-5 victory.
In the doubles qualifier, McLachlan and junior Carlos Cueto received a first round bye and advanced as they defeated Christian Gonzales and Jordan Kelly-Houston of Florida State, 8-5, in the second round.
Cueto and McLachlan move on to face Guillermo Alcorta and Lawrence Formentera of Oklahoma in the third round at 1 p.m. CT on Wednesday. A victory sets them up for a 3 p.m. match that determines whether or not the Golden Bears will receive a spot in the doubles main draw.
The main draw in both singles and doubles will begin on Thursday (Oct. 6). No. 26-ranked Cueto and No. 45-ranked senior Nick Andrews already hold spots in the main singles draw. The No. 5-ranked duo of Andrews and Konigsfeldt are also set to participate in the doubles main draw. For more information on the 2011 ITA All-American Championships, please visit www.itatennis.com.
