SEATTLE - California men's tennis sophomore Ben McLachlan claimed a 6-1, 6-4 win over third-seeded No. 26-ranked junior Carlos Cueto in the singles semifinals of the 2011 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on Mon., Oct. 24. The two Golden Bears met, head-to-head, but only after they teamed up to advance to the doubles title match with a pair of victories, earlier in the day.
McLachlan will draw the tournament's top seed--No. 14-ranked Stanford senior Ryan Thacher--in the title match on Tue., Oct. 25, following his doubles match. Last year, Cal also had two singles players in one semifinal as Cueto and Christoffer Konigsfeldt squared off. Konigsfeldt advanced, but was edged in the title match by Sacramento State's Kiryl Harbatsiuk.
As a duo, Cueto and McLachlan advanced the fourth seed into the finals with an 8-2 win over teammates junior Nick Andrews and freshman Andrew Scholnick in the semifinal. Andrews and Scholnick had defeated the top-seeded No. 29-ranked duo of Emmett Egger and Kyle McMorrow of Washington, 8-5, in the quarterfinals. Earlier, Cueto and McLachlan used an 8-3 win over Oregon's team of Jose Izquierdo and Alex Rovello to advance.
On the other side of the doubles bracket, Konigsfeldt and senior Tommie Murphy fell, 8-3, in the quarterfinals to Stanford's team of Walker Kehrer and Robert Stineman. Kehrer and Stineman won one more match and will meet Cueto and McLachlan in the title match at 10:30 a.m. PT on Tue. Oct. 25. The winner will be awarded an automatic bid to the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in New York, Nov. 3-6. Last year, Andrews and Konigsfeldt represented the Northwest Region as doubles champions.
