SEATTLE - On the second day of the 2011 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships, the California men's tennis team sent four players in the singles round of 16 when play concluded at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on Sat., Oct. 22. The Golden Bears will also send all four of its doubles teams into the round of 16.
No. 26-ranked junior Carlos Cueto carried his third seed into the round of 16 on a 6-4, 6-1 win against Santa Clara's Tom Pham. In the day's only three-set match, fourth-seeded No. 45-ranked senior Nick Andrews came up with a 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 win against Javier Millan of Sacramento State to advance. Sixth-seeded No. 79-ranked junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt defeated Oregon's Daniel Sardu, 6-3, 6-2, and seventh-seeded sophomore Ben McLachlan took out Washington's Matt Stith, 6-1, 6-3.
Cueto, Konigsfeldt, and Ben McLachlan will play their next matches at 1 p.m. PT on Sunday (Oct. 23). Cueto will take the court against Daniel Ho of Stanford; Konigsfeldt draws Emmett Egger of Washington, and Ben McLachlan will face John Morrissey of Stanford. Andrews is set to play his match at 2:30 p.m. against Kyle Dandan of Santa Clara. Quarterfinal matches are set not to begin before 5 p.m., the same day.
Three Bears weren't able to make it out of the round of 32. In a match against a familiar foe, junior Riki McLachlan fell, 6-3, 6-1, to San Francisco's Thai Tu. In two close matches, two Cal freshmen were eliminated from the tournament. Andrew Scholnick was edged in his first-set tiebreaker, 7-2, before Alex Rovello of Oregon took a 6-4 win in the second set. Chase Melton stayed close with Santa Clara's John Lamble, but was defeated, 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles matches, Andrews and Scholnick teamed to take out Jonathan Hultkrantz and Javier Millan of Sacramento State, 8-3, in the opening round. The Cal duo went on to edge Stanford's tandem of Jamin Ball and Daniel Ho, 7-2, in a tiebreaker to advance into the round of 16.
Cal's fourth-seeded team of Cueto and Ben McLachlan came up with an 8-3 win over Kyle Miller and Hugo Verdi-Fortin of UC Davis. Konigsfeldt and senior Tommie Murphy produced an 8-3 score in their match, as well, as they took out Daniel Coelho and Geoff Hernandez of Portland. Riki McLachlan and Melton took the first game against Roy Brandys and Marek Marksoo of Sac State before the Hornet duo retired due to injury.
In two 10:30 a.m. matches, Cal tandems will take the courts against teams from San Francisco. Andrews and Scholnick will take on Mark DeCastro and Tu while Cueto and Ben McLachlan draw Germain Bahri and Jacob Hartwig. At 11:30 a.m., Konigsfeldt and Murphy draw the third-seeded No. 48-ranked team of Gavin Leon and Maxime Olivan from Saint Mary's College, and Riki McLachlan and Chase Melton will take on Stanford's second-seeded duo of John Morrissey and Ryan Thacher.
