SEATTLE - No. 26-ranked California men's tennis junior Carlos Cueto carried his third seed into the singles semifinal of the 2011 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on Sun., Oct. 23. There, he will see a familiar face because seventh-seeded sophomore Ben McLachlan also advanced to the semifinals to guarantee at least one Cal player in the singles championship match.

Cueto took out Stanford's Daniel Ho, 6-3, 6-2, in the round of 16, and continued to roll as he ousted Oregon's Alex Rovello, 6-4, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. McLachlan needed three sets in his round of 16 match against Stanford's John Morrissey, but showed his mettle after being edged, 7-3, in the first-set tiebreaker to come back and win, 6-2, 6-1, going away.

Later, McLachlan scored the quarterfinal upset as he shocked hometown favorite Kyle McMorrow of Washington, 6-1, 6-4. No. 22-ranked McMorrow was the second-seeded singles player in the tournament. McLachlan and Cueto face each other in a 2:30 p.m. PT match on Monday, Oct. 24.

Last year, the Bears also had two singles players in one semifinal as Cueto and Christoffer Konigsfeldt squared off. Konigsfeldt advanced, but was edged in the title match by Sacramento State's Kiryl Harbatsiuk.

Fourth-seeded No. 45-ranked senior Nick Andrews defeated ninth-seeded Kyle Dandan of Santa Clara, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6, with a 10-8 score in the third-set tiebreaker, but was upended by Stanford's Matt Kandath in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-3. Sixth-seeded No. 79-ranked Konigsfeldt had his regional run cut short as he fell to Washington's Emmett Egger, 6-3, 6-4, in the round of 16.

In doubles matches, Cal's fourth-seeded team of Cueto and McLachlan took out San Francisco's duo of Germain Bahri and Jacob Hartwig, 8-5, in the round of 16, to advance. Konigsfeldt and senior Tommie Murphy teamed up to score a big 9-7 win against the third-seeded No. 48-ranked team of Gavin Leon and Maxime Olivan of Saint Mary's College.

Andrews and freshman Andrew Scholnick didn't play their scheduled match against Mark De Castro and Thai Tu of San Francisco as the pair of Dons pulled out of the tournament due to an injury. On the bottom of the bracket, junior Riki McLachlan and freshman Chase Melton were denied a quarterfinal spot by Stanford's second-seeded tandem of Morrissey and Ryan Thacher.

Andrews and Scholnick draw the top seed in the tournament--Washington's No. 29-ranked team of Eggert and McMorrow. Cueto and Ben McLachlan will face Oregon's duo of Jose Izquierdo and Rovello; and Konigsfeldt and Murphy will take on Stanford's team of Walker Kehrer and Robert Stineman. All doubles quarterfinal matches are set for 10 a.m. on Monday, followed by semifinal matches at 11:30 a.m. The doubles championship will be played at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
