STANFORD, Calif. - Top-seeded and No. 1-ranked California women's tennis senior Jana Juricova advanced to the singles semifinal of the 2011 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Sun., Oct. 23, at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. Juricova and freshman Zsofi Susanyi teamed up to advance the second seed to the doubles semifinal, as well. The two Golden Bears will be joined in the semifinals by Cal's third-seeded No. 53-ranked team of junior Annie Goransson and sophomore Anett Schutting.

In her singles quarterfinal match, Juricova faced seventh-seeded No. 42-ranked Marianne Jodoin of Fresno State. The Bulldog put up a fight in the first set, to edge Juricova, 7-5, but Cal's fourth-year veteran responded to come away with 6-2, 6-1 results in the second and third sets.

Eighth-seeded No. 57-ranked junior Goransson drew fourth-seeded No. 7-ranked Nicole Gibbs of Stanford in her quarterfinal, but was unable to decode Gibbs' game in a 6-3, 6-1 defeat.

Juricova and Gibbs will face off in one semifinal at noon PT on Monday (Oct. 24). The two combatants have met one other time, in the semifinals of the 2011 NCAA singles championship. That match also took place at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. In it, Gibbs claimed the first set with a 7-5 score in the tiebreaker, but Juricova came back to win the second set, 7-5. The two dueled to a third-set tiebreaker that Juricova rose up to claim, 7-2, before she went on to win the NCAA title.

On the other side of the bracket, second-seeded No. 17-ranked Mallory Burdette takes on third-seeded No. 4-ranked Denise Dy of Washington at 11 a.m. The singles championship is scheduled for Tuesday.

Bears picked up three more wins in singles consolation matches. Susanyi took out Stanford's No. 116-ranked Veronica Li, 6-1, 6-4. No. 41 junior Tayler Davis earned a 6-0, 6-4 win against Oregon's Julia Metzger, and No. 88-ranked Schutting claimed a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Washington State's Charlotte Koning.

In the doubles draw, Cal's second-seeded duo of Juricova and Susanyi cruised to an 8-0 victory in the round of 16 as the two Bears defeated Jennifer Cornea and Alexa Lee of Cal Poly. Without skipping a beat, the Cal tandem continued to roll and earned an 8-2 win over the sixth-seeded Saint Mary's team of Jade Frampton and Jenny Jullien, in the quarterfinals. The Bears will face Clarisse Baca and Maria Meliuk of Sacramento State in the doubles semifinal at 1:30 p.m. on Monday.

The third-seeded No. 53-ranked team of Goransson and Schutting moved into the quarterfinals with an 8-3 win against the Santa Clara tandem of Kacie Wagner and Alex Zaniewski, in the round of 16. The Cal pair didn't let up as it claimed an 8-4 win over Andjela Nemcevic and Samantha Smith of Washington in the quarterfinals. Goransson and Schutting draw Stanford's eighth-seeded duo of Stacey Tan and Ellen Tsay in a 1:30 p.m. semifinal. Tan and Tsay defeated Cal's newly-formed team of Davis and freshman Cecilia Estlander, 9-7, in the round of 16.
