SEATTLE - The California men's tennis team posted 10 singles victories on the first day of the 2011 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on Fri., Oct. 21. The Golden Bears will put seven players into the singles round of 32 as play continues on Saturday.
All four of Cal's seeded players received first-round byes and won matches in the round of 64. Third-seeded and No. 26-ranked junior Carlos Cueto posted a 6-2, 6-2 win against Oregon's Aaron Clissold while fifth-seeded and No. 45-ranked senior Nick Andrews came through with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Stanford's Walker Kehrer.
No. 79-ranked junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt carried his sixth seed into the next round with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Will Schumacher of San Francisco. Seventh-seeded sophomore Ben McLachlan edged Seattle's Simon Meske for the first-set tiebreaker, and claimed the third set, 7-5, to advance.
Junior Riki McLachlan drew Geoff Hernandez of Portland in his first match and came up with a 6-4, 7-5 win and Senior Ahmed Ismail went three sets against Sacramento State's Marek Marksoo, but fell short, in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 loss.
Senior Tommie Murphy and freshmen, Chase Melton and Andrew Scholnick, each won their first outings in the round of 128. Murphy took out Mario Navarro of Eastern Washington, 6-3, 6-2; Melton earned a 6-1, 6-3 win against Jackson Martin of Portland, and Scholnick picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Saad Benkirane of Saint Mary's College to make it a six-set sweep for the trio of Bears.
Melton came up, big, with a three-set win against one of the ninth-seeded players in the round of 64 as he defeated Stanford's Robert Stineman, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Murphy had his run clipped in a tight match against Oregon's Robin Cambier. Cambier claimed the first set, 6-2, but Murphy mounted a comeback to take the second set with a 7-3 score in the tiebreaker. In a close third set, Cambier came away with a 7-5 win.
Singles matches continue on Saturday. At 3 p.m., Andrews will face Javier Millan of Sacramento State while Konigsfeldt takes on Daniel Sardu of Oregon. Scholnick gets a 4 p.m. start against Alex Rovello of Oregon followed by 4:30 p.m. matches in which Melton will take on John Lamble of Santa Clara and Cueto faces off against Tom Pham of Santa Clara. Ben McLachlan hits the court for a 5:30 p.m. match against Matt Stith of Washington and Riki McLachlan will take on Thai Tu of San Francisco at 6 p.m. Singles round of 16 matches are set to begin at 1 p.m., on Sunday, with quarterfinals to begin not before 5 p.m.
Doubles matches will get under way on Saturday morning. Andrews will team with Scholnick to face Millan and Jonathan Hultkrantz of Sacramento State at 11 a.m. with the potential of a 1 p.m. round-of-32 match looming against Jamin Ball and Daniel Ho of Stanford. Ismail and Murphy hit the court at 1 p.m. against Daniel Coelho and Geoff Hernandez of Portland. Riki McLachlan and Melton will play at 3 p.m., and Cal's fourth-seeded team of Cueto and Ben McLachlan will play at 2 p.m. against teams still to be determined.
