STANFORD, Calif. - After one day of play in the 2011 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships, the California women's tennis team had seven singles players push ahead to earn spots in the singles round of 32 at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium on Fri., Oct. 21.
All five seeded Golden Bears advanced as Cal players dropped just two sets in the day's eight victories. In the catbird's seat, top-seeded and No. 1-ranked senior Jana Juricova cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Sabastiani Leon Chao of San Jose State. Sixth-seeded and No. 41-ranked junior Tayler Davis took out Alexa Lee of Cal Poly, 6-3, 6-2, and eighth-seeded No. 57-ranked junior Annie Goransson claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win over Dahra Zamudio of UC Davis.
In the only three-set match of the round of 64, 13th-seeded and No. 88-ranked sophomore Anett Schutting came back after dropping her first set, 9-7, in the tiebreaker to Saint Mary's College's Catherine Leduc to post a 6-4, 6-3 win in the final two sets. 15th-seeded freshman Zsofi Susanyi recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win against Chau Truong of San Jose State while fellow frosh Cecilia Estlander put up the day's only 6-0, 6-0 score in a victory against Jocelyn Davis of Cal Poly. Sophomore Alice Duranteau claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win against Jessica Agra of Santa Clara to advance.
Senior Stephany Chang drew Anne Susdorf of Fresno State in the first round and advanced with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 win. Chang faced 14th-seeded Liudmila Vasilieva of Washington State in the round of 64, but was unable to move further as she fell, 6-4, 6-2. Senior Catalina Visico drew Elizabeth Searl of Saint Mary's in the round of 64, but was turned away in a 6-1, 6-1 loss.
All of Cal's round-of-32 matches are scheduled to begin not before 10 a.m. PT on Sat., Oct. 22. The round of 16 is set to begin not before 1 p.m. with the singles quarterfinals scheduled for noon on Sunday.
Juricova will take on Charlotte Koning of Washington State in the next round. Susanyi draws Patricia Skowronski of Oregon; Goransson gets Alana McMahon of San Francisco; Schutting and Elizaveta Luzina of Washington State lock up; Estlander will take on 16th-seeded No. 111-ranked Elisabeth Fournier of Washington State; Davis will face the ITA's third-ranked newcomer Ellen Tsay of Stanford; and Duranteau will take on second-seeded and No. 17-ranked Mallory Burdette of Stanford.
Chang begins her run in the singles back draw round of 64 with an 11 a.m. match against Isadora Busch of San Jose State and Visico draws Kelly Lamble of Santa Clara at 3 p.m. in a consolation match.
All four of Cal's doubles teams received first-round byes and will open play at 9 a.m. on Saturday in the round of 32. The doubles round of 16 is set for Sunday at 9 a.m. with the quarterfinals set to begin not before 2 p.m. on the same day.
Cal's second-seeded team of Juricova and Susanyi will take on Bianca Modoc and Tanya Murtagh of Fresno State while the Bears' third-seeded duo of Goransson and Schutting draws Sofia Hager and Skowronski. Davis teams with Estlander to take on the Cal Poly tandem of Davis and Ane McPike, and Chang and Visico get together to face Washington State's team of Fournier and Olga Musilovich.
