STANFORD, Calif. - Top-seeded and No. 1-ranked California women's tennis senior Jana Juricova pushed her way into the singles quarterfinal of the 2011 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Sat., Oct. 22, at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. She will be joined in the quarterfinals by eighth-seeded No. 57-ranked junior Annie Goransson. The Golden Bears also sent three tandems into the doubles round of 16.

Juricova and Goransson each made things look easy with a pair of straight-set wins. Juricova started off with a 6-0, 6-0 bicycle victory over Washington State's Charlotte Koning before she earned her 10th win of the fall in a 6-2, 6-4 final against 10th-seeded No. 71-ranked Tatsiana Kapshai of Sacramento State. Goransson also came up with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the round of 32 as she defeated Alana McMahon of San Francisco. She was able to move into the quarterfinal after dropping just one game, today, when she took out Fresno State's Melissa McQueen, 6-0, 6-1.

Both singles quarterfinal matches are set to begin at noon PT on Sunday (Oct. 23). Juricova will face seventh-seeded No. 42-ranked Marianne Jodoin of Fresno State in her match, and Goransson draws fourth-seeded No. 7-ranked Nicole Gibbs of Stanford, in hers. Should both Goransson and Juricova emerge victorious, the Bears would face each other in the semifinal on Monday.

Two other Golden Bears advanced to the round of 16 before they were eliminated. 13th-seeded No. 88-ranked sophomore Anett Schutting took a 6-2, 6-0 win against Washington State's Elizaveta Luzina, but couldn't get past fifth-seeded No. 12-ranked Stacey Tan of Stanford in the next round. Last year's NCAA singles runner-up edged Schutting, 7-5, 6-3. 15th-seeded freshman Zsofi Susanyi came up with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Patricia Skowronski of Oregon in the round of 32, but fell, 6-0, 6-4 to Jodoin in the round of 16.

Only three Bears didn't make it out of the round of 32. Sixth-seeded No. 41-ranked junior Tayler Davis fell, 7-5, 6-4, to Stanford's freshman phenom Ellen Tsay. Sophomore Alice Duranteau faced a tall order as she went up against second-seeded No. 17-ranked Mallory Burdette of Stanford. Duranteau had her 10-match winning streak snapped in a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Burdette. Freshman Cecilia Estlander was the last Bear out as she fell, 6-1, 6-4, to 16th-seeded No. 111-ranked Elisabeth Fournier of Washington State.

In singles consolation matches, senior Stephany Chang took out Isadora Busch of San Jose State, 6-3, 6-2, to move on. Senior Catalina Visico was defeated, 6-1, 6-4, by Kelly Lamble of Santa Clara. Chang will face San Jose State's Chau Truong in the singles consolation round of 32. Davis, Estlander, Schutting, and Susanyi will also play additional singles consolation matches on Sunday.

In doubles round of 32 matches, Cal's second-seeded duo of Juricova and Susanyi overcame Fresno State's Bianca Modoc and Tanya Murtagh, 8-4. The Bears' third-seeded No. 53-ranked team of Goransson and Schutting claimed an 8-3 victory against Sofia Hager and Skowronski of Oregon; and Davis and Estlander came up with an 8-2 win against Jocelyn Davis and Ane McPike of Cal Poly. Chang and Visico found themselves on the short end of an 8-3 final against Fournier and Olga Musilovich of Washington State.

Juricova and Susanyi will face Alexa Lee and Jennifer Cornea of Cal Poly in the round of 16. Goransson and Schutting draw Kacie Wagner and Alex Zaniewski of Santa Clara in the next round. Davis and Estlander take on the eighth-seeded team of Tan and Tsay from Stanford. All doubles round of 16 matches are set to start at 10 a.m. PT with the quarterfinal round scheduled to begin not before 2 p.m.
