2011 Cal Nike Invitational Draws Schedules, and Results
BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team concluded the first tournament of the fall in remarkable fashion as Golden Bears walked away with the singles crown, the doubles crown, the Blue Flight singles title, the Blue Flight's singles back-draw, and the Blue Flight's doubles back-draw in the 2011 Cal Nike Invitational at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Sun., Oct. 2.
In the brightest of the final day's brilliant performances, No. 1-ranked and top-seeded senior Jana Juricova stole the show as she claimed the singles championship. The Gold Flight semifinals were a testament to the strength of Cal's squad as each of the four spots were held by Bears.
Juricova dispatched of her doubles partner--fifth-seeded and No. 88-ranked sophomore Anett Schutting--in her semifinal, 6-2, 6-4, to advance. Second-seeded No. 41-ranked junior Tayler Davis needed three sets, but came away with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over freshman Sofie Susanyi to set up a one-versus-two final. Juricova pulled no punches against her own teammate as she posted a bicycle victory against Davis, 6-0, 6-0, to walk away with the singles championship.
In the doubles final, Cal's top-seeded and No. 13-ranked duo of Juricova and Schutting found themselves on the same side of the net. The pair claimed a 9-7 win against Sacramento State's second-seeded tandem of Clarisse Baca and Maria Meliuk to hoist the doubles trophy.
In the Blue Flight, senior Stephany Chang continued her hot streak as she claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win over Maggie McGeorge of Santa Clara in the semifinal round. Her victory set her up against Marina Nikolic of San Francisco, whom she took care of in a 6-3, 6-2 win.
On the back side of the Blue Flight, sophomore Alice Duranteau came up with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Chau Truong of San Jose State in the semifinal and finished up her back-draw triumph with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Kelly Chui of UC Davis.
Chang teamed with freshman Cecilia Estlander to post a victory over Morgan Anderson and Meghan Sheehan Dizon of BYU in the Blue Flight's doubles back draw. No. 57-ranked junior Annie Goransson picked up another victory in singles consolation with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Nevada's Emma Verberne.
