Golden Bears Conclude Run at Bulldog Classic

FRESNO, Calif. - Members of the California men's tennis team concluded play in the 2011 Fresno State Bulldog Classic on Sat., Oct. 1, at the Wathen Tennis Center. The Golden Bears had advanced to singles quarterfinals and doubles semifinals.

Up against host school Fresno State's second-seeded Francis Alcantara in the Flight A singles quarterfinals, freshman Chase Melton fell, 7-5, 6-2.

Senior Tommie Murphy was defeated by San Francisco's Jacob Hartwig, 6-3, 6-1, in Flight A's singles consolation quarterfinal round.

In doubles play, Murphy and freshman Andrew Pises fell short of making a finals appearance as the second-seeded team of Robin Cambier and Jeff Mullen of Oregon came up with an 8-3 victory in the semifinals.

Next on the schedule for the Bears is the prestigious All-American Championship tournament to be held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of Tulsa University in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 4-9. Qualifying rounds will take place on Oct. 4-5.

No. 26-ranked junior Carlos Cueto received a bid to the All-American singles main draw while No. 45-ranked senior Nick Andrews and No. 79-ranked junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt were each announced to the qualifying tournament's field. Andrews is also an alternate for the singles main draw and freshman Ben McLachlan was named as an alternate for the qualifying tournament.

In the doubles draw, Andrews will team with Konigsfeldt. Cueto and McLachlan will stand by as alternates to the doubles qualifying tournament. For more information on the 2011 ITA All-American Championships, please visit www.itatennis.com.
