Freshmen Forge Ahead at Saint Mary's Invitational

MORAGA, Calif. - California women's tennis freshmen Sofie Susanyi and Cecilia Estlander each advanced to singles quarterfinals and teamed up to earn a spot in the doubles quarterfinal after the first day of the 2011 Saint Mary's Invitational at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex on Fri., Oct. 14.

The first-year Golden Bears took the Red Flight by storm with three straight-set victories in the first two rounds. Seventh-seeded Susanyi raced past San Francisco's Yurie Hashiguchi, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round, before she took out Kylie Peek of Gonzaga, 6-1, 6-3, in the round of 16.

Estlander advanced out of her first-round match against Kelly Chui of UC Davis with a 6-4, 6-3 win to draw Stanford's fifth-seeded and No. 116-ranked Veronica Li. Li took a 7-5 win in the first set, but Estlander responded, impressively, to deal Li a three-set upset loss, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0.

Susanyi will draw fourth-seeded Ellen Tsay of Stanford--who is the third-ranked freshman in the nation--in her 11 a.m. PT quarterfinal match on Sat., Oct. 15. Estlander will meet third-seeded and No. 86-ranked Katie Le of Santa Clara in another quarterfinal at 11:30 a.m.

Senior Stephany Chang was eliminated from the Red Flight, in the first round, on a 6-4, 6-0 loss to Catherine Leduc of Saint Mary's. Chang walked over in the first round of consolation matches and will play in the consolation quarterfinal at noon PT on Saturday.

In the Red Flight's doubles round of 16, Estlander and Susanyi joined forces and carried the third seed into the quarterfinals with an 8-5 win over Kelly Lamble and Alex Zaniewski of Santa Clara. The Cal duo will face Sacramento State's tandem of Rebeca Delgado and Sophie Lohscheidt in the quarterfinals at 8:30 a.m. PT on Saturday. The semifinals begin not before 9:45 a.m., with the championship match set for 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Cal's other doubles team of Chang and sophomore Alice Duranteau couldn't advance out of the first round as the duo fell, 8-1, to the UC Davis team of Chui and Megan Heneghan.

In the White Flight, second-seeded Duranteau advanced to the quarterfinals with a pair of straight-set wins. Duranteau earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over An Nguyen of UC Davis, in the first round, and walked away with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Sonoma State's Krista Cole in the round of 16. Senior Catalina Visico went the distance against Noelle Eades of UC Davis, but fell in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Duranteau will draw Lauren Curry of UC Davis in the quarterfinals at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
