MORAGA, Calif. - California women's tennis freshman Cecilia Estlander moved into the singles semifinal of the 2011 Saint Mary's Invitational at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex on Sat., Oct. 15. The first-year Golden Bear took out the third-seed in the tournament--No. 86-ranked Katie Le of Santa Clara--in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
Estlander will face top-seeded and No. 59-ranked Catherine Isip of Saint Mary's College in one semifinal at 10:30 a.m. PT on Sun., Oct. 16. The Red Flight's championship match is set for 1:30 p.m.
Seventh-seeded freshman Sofie Susanyi--Cal's other singles quarterfinalist--was set to face fourth-seeded Ellen Tsay of Stanford, but withdrew due to an injury.
In the White Flight, second-seeded sophomore Alice Duranteau claimed a three-set win over Lauren Curry of UC Davis, and will move on to face San Jose State's Chau Truong in the semifinals. Curry won the first set with a 7-1 score in the tiebreaker, but Duranteau turned up the heat on Curry to come away with 6-1 and 6-4 wins in the second and third sets.
Senior Stephany Chang received a walkover in the first round of the Red Flight singles consolation draw and proceeded to defeat Mil Hadzi-Tanovic of San Francisco, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0, with a 10-8 score in the match tiebreaker. Chang will face Kelly Chui of Santa Clara in a 10:30 a.m. consolation semifinal on Sunday.
In the only other singles match of the day--a round-robin consolation match--senior Catalina Visico fell in her match tiebreaker, 10-7, to Brittany Warly of Santa Clara after she came back from a 6-2 first-set loss to force the tiebreaker with a 6-1 win in the second set.
In the Red Flight's doubles quarterfinals, Sacramento State's tandem of Rebeca Delgado and Sophie Lohscheidt upended Cal's third-seeded freshman duo of Estlander and Susanyi, 8-4, in the quarterfinal. Chang and Duranteau teamed up and received a walkover in the doubles consolation quarterfinals, but fell, 8-5, to UC Davis's team of Nicole Koehly and Dahra Zamudio in the semifinal.
