FRESNO, Calif. - California men's tennis redshirt freshman Chase Melton came out of the gate swinging as he recorded a pair of victories in his first official collegiate matches at the 2011 Fresno State Bulldog Classic on the courts at the Wathen Tennis Center on Fri., Sept. 30. Senior Tommie Murphy and freshman Andrew Pises posted two wins to set the Golden Bears up with a duo in the doubles semifinals.
Melton claimed an 8-5 win in the first-set tiebreaker against Andre Almeada of Fresno City College, in the first round, but was forced to a third set when Almeada won the second, 6-2. Melton came back to take the match with a 6-4 win in the third set. In a rhythm, Melton eliminated fifth-seeded Daniel Sardu of Oregon in the second round, 6-1, 6-4, and will draw Fresno State's second-seeded Francis Alcantara in the quarterfinals at 10:30 a.m. PT on Sat., Oct. 1.
Freshman Andrew Scholnick was tested by Alex Golding of Pacific in his first-round match, but tamed the Tiger, 7-5, 7-6, with a 7-4 tiebreaker score. Scholnick drew Oregon's Robin Cambier in the round of 16, but couldn't keep pace as he was eliminated, 6-2, 6-2.
Murphy fell in his first-round match against Pacific's Alexander Hamilton, 6-1, 6-4, but earned a victory in consolation play over Connor Coates of UC Davis, 3-6, 7-6, 1-0, with a 7-5 second-set tiebreaker score, and a 12-10 count in the match tiebreaker. In the B Flight, Pises faced Hugo Verdi Fortin of UC Davis, but was unable to advance as he was defeated, 6-1, 6-2.
Murphy teamed with Pises to take out Jordan Bridge and Marco Comuzzo of Cal Poly, 9-8, in the first round; and went up, 5-0, on Moez Echargui and Victor Ouvard of Nevada, in the quarterfinal to force the Wolfpack duo into retirement. Melton and Scholnick fell, 8-6, to Fresno State's Zach Leslie and Sai Kartik Nakireddi, in their first-round doubles match. Murphy and Pises will draw Cambier and Jeff Mullen of Oregon in the doubles semifinal on Sat., Oct. 1.
