2011 Cal Nike Invitational Draws Schedules, and Results
BERKELEY - Top-seeded and No. 1-ranked California women's tennis senior Jana Juricova leads five Golden Bears into the singles quarterfinals after the first day of play in the 2011 Cal Nike Invitational on Fri., Sept. 30, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. All three of Cal's doubles teams also advanced out of the first round and received quarterfinal berths in a successful start to the fall tournament season.
Six Bears ripped through the first round of play and dropped a total of just 20 games without giving up a set. Juricova took out Nevada's Emma Verberne, 6-1, 6-1, but it was fifth-seeded No. 88-ranked sophomore Anett Schutting who had the quickest first-round match as she earned a bicycle win, 6-0, 6-0, against Santa Clara's Kelly Lamble. In two 6-3, 6-2 wins, Juricova defeated Jade Frampton of Saint Mary's College, and Schutting took out Sacramento State's Maria Meliuk in the round of 16 to move on.
In their first action with the Bears, freshmen Cecilia Estlander and Sofie Susanyi posted impressive wins. Estlander defeated BYU's Megan Price, 6-2, 6-4, and pushed seventh-seeded Hannah James of Arizona State to a third set before she bowed out, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, in the round of 16. Susanyi claimed a 6-1, 6-4 win against Dahra Zamudio of UC Davis and then shocked sixth-seeded No. 115-ranked Michelle Brycki of ASU with a 6-0, 6-1 win to move into the quarterfinals.
Not to be outdone, Cal's juniors also had impressive first-day performances. No. 41-ranked Tayler Davis posted a 6-0, 6-4 win against Alex Zaniewski of Santa Clara in the first round, and then took out Tanya Murtagh of Fresno State, 6-3, 6-1, to move into her quarterfinal. No. 57-ranked Annie Goransson turned away Iveta Masarova of Pacific, 6-0, 6-3, before she took a 6-1, 6-2 win against Catherine Leduc of Saint Mary's in the second round.
All singles quarterfinals will take place on Sat., Oct. 1, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Davis will face eighth-seeded Clarisse Baca of Sacramento State in an 11 a.m. PT match. Goransson and Susanyi will face off in the only all-Cal quarterfinal at 11 a.m. At 11:15 a.m., Juricova will lock up with seventh-seeded James of ASU and Schutting will draw fourth-seeded No. 77-ranked Jenny Jullien of Saint Mary's in the 4-5 match-up.
In the Blue Flight, senior Stephany Chang advanced to the singles quarterfinal with a 6-4, 7-6 win against San Jose State's Erica Medlin in the round of 16. Chang won her second set with an 8-6 tiebreaker score. In a match with an identical score, top-seeded sophomore Alice Duranteau was upset by Nevada's Sophie Stevens, but came away with a win in consolation play against BYU's Desiree Tran, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0, with a 13-11 score in the match tiebreaker. Chang will draw third-seeded Kacie Wagner of Santa Clara for a 12:15 p.m. quarterfinal match on Saturday.
Senior Catalina Visico added Cal's 14th singles victory of the day on her 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory against Emily Prescott of San Jose State in the White Flight's round of 16. Visico drew UC Davis's Nicole Koehly in the quarterfinal, but was turned away, 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles matches, all three of Cal's Gold Flight tandems advanced out of the round of 16 with strong victories. As the top-seeded duo, the Bears' 13th-ranked team of Juricova and Schutting had an easy time with Melissa McQueen and Murtagh of Fresno State as it earned an 8-0 win. Duranteau and Susanyi teamed up to get an 8-5 win against Anna Chikhikvishvili and Liz Searl of Saint Mary's; and the team of Davis and Goransson took out Santa Clara's Lamble and Maggie McGeorge, 8-2. In the Blue Flight, Molly Aloia and Leduc of Saint Mary's upended Cal's top-seeded team of Chang and Estlander, 8-3, in the first round.
