BERKELEY - The ninth-ranked California women's tennis team (2-0) earned a 5-2 win over No. 40 Saint Mary's College (1-2) to conclude the 2011 ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Hellman Tennis Complex on Monday, Jan. 31. With the victory, the Golden Bears punched their ticket to the 2011 ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Virginia at the Boar's Head Tennis Club in Charlottesville, Va., Feb. 18-21. Cal has made two consecutive appearances in the semifinals of the indoor championships.
The Bears and the Gaels traded punches to open the day. Cal's sophomore duo of Tayler Davis and Annie Goransson earned an 8-2 win on the second doubles court over Alita Fisher and Jenny Jullien. Saint Mary's evened things up with a win on court three as Anna Chikhikvishvili and Claire Soper stood up senior Marina Cossou and freshman Alice Duranteau, 8-1. But the Bears secured the doubles point when their No. 5-ranked team of senior Mari Andersson and junior Jana Juricova defeated SMC's No. 87-ranked duo of Catherine Isip and Alex Poorta, 8-1.
Into singles matches, Cal went up, 2-0, when it got a straight-set win from No. 35-ranked Davis at court four. Davis made short work of Soper in her 6-2, 6-2 victory before top-ranked Juricova posted a 6-1, 6-3 win against No. 85 Poorta at No. 1 singles. The other four matches went three sets.
The Gaels got on the board with Chikhikvishvili's 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Duranteau at No. 5 singles, but the Bears sealed the deal on No. 44 Goransson's three-set win over Jullien on court three. Goransson posted a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win to send the Bears to the ITA's indoor championship.
After she was edged for the first set in a 7-5 tiebreaker, No. 46 Andersson came back to take the second set, 6-4, before she cruised past Isip in a 6-1 win for the third set. Saint Mary's earned one more point when Laurie Gingras came back from dropping the first set to defeat junior Stephany Chang, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
The Bears will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 4, to host No. 5 UCLA (4-0) at the Hellman Tennis Complex for a 1:30 p.m. PT dual.
