BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team tacked up five wins in singles and two in doubles on the second day of the 2011 Cal Winter Invitational at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Sat., Jan. 22. In matches against Fresno State, the Golden Bears were victorious in each of the top five singles flights, led by No. 1-ranked junior Jana Juricova, who secured a 6-0, 6-3 win over No. 75-ranked Marianne Jodoin.
No. 46-ranked senior Mari Andersson posted a 6-1, 6-3 win against Laura Pola in the second flight. Cal's sophomores continued to show their dominance as No. 44-ranked Annie Goransson blanked Melissa McQueen, 6-0, 6-0, in the third flight. No. 35 Tayler Davis logged her team-high 17th singles win in the fourth flight over No. 81-ranked Abby Hayley, 7-6, 6-3, with a 7-5 first-set tiebreaker victory.
Freshman Alice Duranteau took out Bianca Modoc in the fifth flight, 6-3, 6-2, to earn her first collegiate victory. Junior Stephany Chang was defeated by Olga Kirpicheva, 6-0, 6-2, in the sixth flight, and junior Catalina Visico fell, 6-0, 6-1, to Anna Mikhaylova, in the seventh flight.
In the top doubles flight, Cal's No. 5-ranked duo of Andersson and Juricova registered their team-high 15th victory of the season with an 8-2 win over Cal Poly's No. 65-ranked tandem of Alexa Lee and Amy Markhoff. Davis and Goransson edged the Broncos' Jocelyn Davis and Ashley Pane, 8-6, in the second doubles flight. Chang and Duranteau found themselves on the wrong end of an 8-6 match against Gabrielle Gatewood and Florence Lehane. Visico teamed with Mikhaylova in a mixed match against Ane McPike and Kathryn Webb, but the newly-formed duo fell, 8-2.
The Bears return to action to conclude the Winter Invitational with doubles matches against Fresno State at noon PT on Sun., Jan. 23.
