BERKELEY - California's No. 5-ranked women's tennis doubles team of senior Mari Andersson and junior Jana Juricova highlighted the first day of the 2011 Cal Winter Invitational at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The tandem battled back amidst a 6-3 deficit to defeat the No. 87-ranked team of Catherine Isip and Alexandra Poorta of Saint Mary's College, 9-7. As a team, the Golden Bears secured four wins in singles and two more in doubles on Friday, Jan. 21.

Juricova--the top-ranked singles player in the nation--made off with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Alexa Lee of Cal Poly in the top flight of the round-robin tournament. No. 46-ranked Andersson duplicated that score with a win against the Broncos' Florence Lehane in the second flight. After dropping her first set, No. 35-ranked sophomore Tayler Davis took out Cal Poly's Ashley Pane, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

In the fourth flight, No. 44-ranked sophomore Annie Goransson made short work of Jocelyn Davis in a 6-1, 6-1 triumph. The Broncos earned three wins in the fifth, sixth, and seventh flights. Jennifer Cornea took out freshman Alice Duranteau in two sets, 6-3, 7-6, with a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker. In the sixth flight, junior Stephany Chang fell, 6-0, 6-4, to Kathryn Webb. In the last flight, junior Catalina Visico lost to Gabrielle Gatewood, 6-0, 6-3.

Cal's other doubles victory was delivered by Davis and Goransson. The pair defeated Alita Fisher and Jenny Julien of Saint Mary's, 8-6, in the second doubles flight. Chang and Duranteau drew Molly Aloia and Diana Bukajeva in the third flight, but fell, 8-4.

The Bears return to action with doubles matches against Cal Poly at noon PT on Saturday, Jan. 22.
