BERKELEY - California women's tennis sophomores Annie Goransson and Tayler Davis each moved into singles semifinal matches after the second day of play at the 2010 Cal Nike Invitational. The three-day event on the courts of the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts will conclude with championship matches on Sunday, Sept. 26.
In the Gold singles quarterfinal, Goransson defeated Natalia Pintusava of Minnesota, 6-2, 7-5, to earn her spot in the semifinal. Top-seeded No. 16-ranked senior Mari Andersson drew seventh-seeded No. 87 Alexandra Poorta of Saint Mary's College, but was unable to come up with a win as Poorta prevailed, 6-1, 7-5. Goransson will face Claire Soper of Saint Mary's College in a 10:30 a.m. PT match at Hellman Tennis Complex on Sunday. With a win, Goransson can move into the championship final at 1:30 p.m.
In the Blue singles quarterfinal, second-seeded Davis defeated Katie Le of Santa Clara, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6, with a 7-4 win of a thrilling third-set finish. She will face Julia Hansen of Pacific in a 10:30 a.m. semifinal match at Hellman Tennis Complex. With a win, Davis moves into the championship final at 1:30 p.m.
In the Gold doubles draw, Cal's top-seeded and No. 1-ranked duo of Andersson and junior Jana Juricova moved two spots to earn a shot in the championship match against Arizona State's fourth-seeded team of Micaela Hein and Kelcy McKenna at 9 a.m. on Sunday. Hein and McKenna ousted Davis and Goransson from the competition with an 8-6 win in the quarterfinal.
Andersson and Juricova defeated Kelsie Craig and Megan Price of Brigham Young, 8-4, in the quarterfinal before earning an 8-4 win over Michelle Brycki and Sianna Simmons of Arizona State in the semifinal. Davis and Goransson will draw Natasha Marks and Susan McRann of Arizona in a consolation doubles match.
In a Blue doubles consolation, Deborah Castany and Sarah Landsman of Arizona took out juniors Stephany Chang and Catalina Visico, 8-2. Visico won her White singles consolation match over Eleanor Ford of Santa Clara, 2-6, 6-1, with a 10-2 win in the third-set tiebreaker.
