BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team put three players into singles quarterfinals after the first day of the 2010 Cal Nike Invitational at Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts on Friday, Sept. 24. The Golden Bears also pushed two doubles teams into the quarterfinal round of the top doubles flight. Players return to action at 9 a.m. PT on Saturday, Sept. 25.
No. 16-ranked senior Mari Andersson upheld the top seed in the Gold singles flight with a two-set win, 7-5, 7-5, over Marianne Jodoin of Fresno State and a three-set victory over Sacramento State's Tatsiana Kapshai, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Sophomore Annie Goransson will join Andersson in the quarterfinal after she took two straight-set wins in the Gold singles flight. Goransson defeated Sacramento State's Rebecca Delgado, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round before taking out eighth-seeded No. 99 Hannah James of Arizona State, 6-1, 6-3, in the round of 16.
Andersson will face seventh-seeded No. 87 Alexandra Poorta of Saint Mary's College and Goransson draws Minnesota's Natalia Pintusava in 12:30 p.m. quarterfinal matches at Hellman Tennis Complex.
In the Blue singles flight, sophomore Tayler Davis carried her second seed into the quarterfinal round by taking out Katharina Knoebl of Sacramento State, 6-4, 6-1, in the first round before earning a 6-2, 7-5 win over Anna Jeczmionka of Long Beach State in the round of 16. Davis draws Katie Le of Santa Clara in a 2 p.m. match at Hellman Tennis Complex. Junior Stephany Chang surrendered her fourth seed in the first round as she fell in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, to Abby Mary Haley of Fresno State. Chang suffered a second loss at the hands of Brigham Young's Elle Carney, 6-3, 6-1, in the Blue singles consolation round.
Junior Catalina Visico bowed out of the White singles flight as Chau Truong of San Jose State claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win in the round of 16. Visico will play Santa Clara's Eleanor Ford at Channing Tennis Courts in a 1 p.m. White consolation semifinal match.
In Gold-flight doubles play, Cal's top-ranked and top-seeded duo of Andersson and junior Jana Juricova made short work of Minnesota's Alessandra Ferrazi and Alexa Palen with an 8-2 win in the round of 16. Andersson and Juricova will face Callie Craig and Megan Price of BYU in the next round. Davis and Goransson earned an 8-3 win over Le and Kacie Wagner of Santa Clara and will draw Arizona State's fourth-seeded tandem of Micaela Hein and Kelcy McKenna. Both doubles quarterfinal matches begin at 9 a.m. and are followed immediately by semifinal matches at 10:15 a.m. at Hellman Tennis Complex.
In the Blue doubles flight, Chang and Visico were edged out of a quarterfinal spot as they fell, 8-6, to Christina Goehl and Nikaelli Maciel of Pacific. The Cal duo will face Molly Aloia and Diana Bukajeva of Saint Mary's College in a consolation quarterfinal match at 9 a.m. at the Channing Tennis Courts. Blue doubles consolation semifinals also begin at 10:15 a.m. at the Channing Courts.
