TEMPE, Ariz. - California women's tennis sophomore Tayler Davis advanced to the singles quarterfinal of the 16th annual Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational at the Whiteman Tennis Complex on Friday, Nov. 5. Sophomore Annie Goransson moved into the round of 16 but was eliminated there.
Davis defeated Ohio State's Gabby Steele, 6-0, 6-3, in the round of 32, and then took out third-seeded and No. 80-ranked Pavlina Smatova of Oregon in the round of 16, 7-5, 6-3. Goransson earned a 6-2, 7-5 win over Ohio State's Kelsey Haviland in the opening round before she was edged by Northwestern's Brittany Wowchuk, 7-6, 6-4, in the round of 16. Wowchuk came up with a 9-7 win in the first-set tiebreaker to seize momentum heading into the second set.
Juniors Stephany Chang and Catalina Visico were each eliminated in the first round and will participate in the consolation tournament. Chang fell, 6-0, 6-0, to No. 103-ranked Whitney Taney of Michigan, and Visico surrendered a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Michigan's Mimi Nguyen.
In round-robin doubles matches. Davis and Goransson earned a 9-7 win over Paloma Escobedo and Cami Hubbs of Ohio State. Chang and Visico were defeated by a hybrid duo of Arizona State's Hannah James and Michigan's Kristin Wig, 8-5.
Play continues with doubles matches at 9 a.m. PT on Saturday, Nov. 6. Singles quarterfinals and semifinals will be played following doubles matches with the championship match set for Sunday, Nov. 7.
