FLUSHING, N.Y. - No. 1-ranked California women's tennis junior Jana Juricova advanced to both the singles and doubles semifinals of the 2010 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Tennis Championship at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Friday, Nov. 5.
As the second seeded player in the singles tournament, Juricova moved through two rounds on the second day of play. She took out Florida's Alex Cercone, 6-2, 6-1, in the round of 16, and then duplicated that score to make short work of fifth-seeded and No. 7-ranked Denise Dy of Washington in the quarterfinal. Juricova draws No. 15 Aerial Ellis of Texas in the semifinal and will take the court at 10:30 a.m. PT, on Saturday, Nov. 6.
No. 16-ranked senior Mari Andersson was able to stun the top seed in the singles tournament by claiming the first set of her round of 16 match, 6-4, against No. 2 Hilary Barte of Stanford. But Barte retaliated to complete the three-set victory with a 6-4, 6-2 score in the second and third sets.
Andersson and Juricova hold the second seed in the doubles bracket. The top-ranked Golden Bears defeated Anna Maria Constantinescu and Alice Radu of Oklahoma in the quarterfinal, 9-7, to advance. They will face Clemson's third-seeded and No. 5-ranked team of Josipa Bek and Keri Wong in the semifinal. The Bears and the Tigers will take the court at 7 a.m. PT.
