USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships Home Page

FLUSHING, N.Y. - No. 1-ranked California women's tennis junior Jana Juricova and No. 16-ranked senior Mari Andersson each advanced to the singles round of 16 of the 2010 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Tennis Championships at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Thursday, Nov. 4. As a pair, the No. 1-ranked Golden Bear tandem advanced to the doubles quarterfinal.

As the second seed in the singles tournament, Juricova took out No. 22-ranked Marta Lesniak of Southern Methodist, 6-2, 6-2, in the opening round. Andersson was paired up against Kristin Strimple of Point Loma Nazarene University in the round of 32. Strimple was the winner of the USTA/ITA Small College Super Bowl Championship. Andersson had little trouble moving on as she earned a 6-0, 6-2 win.

Andersson will face the top seed in the tournament, No. 2-ranked Hilary Barte of Stanford, in the round of 16. Juricova draws Alex Cercone of Florida in the next round.

In doubles play, the second-seeded Cal duo posted an 8-4 win over Utah's No. 33-ranked team of Paige Miles and Anastasia Putilina in the round of 16. The Bears will draw Anna Maria Constantinescu and Alice Radu of Oklahoma in a 6 a.m. PT match on Friday, Nov. 5.

Play continues with doubles quarterfinal matches, followed by the singles round of 16 and quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 5. Semifinals in both draws are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 6, with championship matches set for Sunday, Nov. 7.
