MORAGA, Calif. - The California women's tennis team sent two players into the Red flight singles quarterfinal of the 2010 Saint Mary's Invitational at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex on Friday, Oct. 8. Fifth-seeded sophomore Annie Goransson and sophomore Tayler Davis each advanced to the quarterfinals with a pair of wins on the first day of action.
Goransson defeated Julia Wartenburger of San Francisco, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 32 before earning a 6-2, 6-4 win against Megan Heneghan of UC Davis in the round of 16. Davis was as successful in the first round as she took out Rika Mehndiratta of Gonzaga, 6-3, 6-0. The round of 16 proved more difficult for Davis as she faced Katie Le of Santa Clara. Le pushed Davis to a third set as the two split, 6-2, 1-6, with Davis winning first, but the second-year Bear was able to get back on track to get a 6-3 win in the third.
Junior Stephany Chang was able to advance to the round of 16, but was eliminated by Loyola Marymount's seventh-seeded April Bisharat, 6-0, 6-0. Chang won her first-round match in three sets, 6-3, 0-6, 6-4, against Diana Bukajeva of Saint Mary's College.
In the Blue flight, junior Catalina Visico fell, 6-1, 6-3, in the first round to Blair Reed of San Francisco. Visico turned around to get a 6-3, 6-3 win against Shannon Contreras of Dominican University in singles consolation.
Davis and Goransson paired up to hold the top seed in the doubles competition. The Cal duo defeated Alina Savchuk and Katharina Knoebl of Sacramento State, 8-1, in the round of 16 to move into the quarterfinal of the Red flight. Chang and Visico competed out of the White doubles flight, but fell, 8-6, to Sabastiani Leon Chao and Sandra Florea of San Jose State in the first round.
Play continues with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles beginning at 9 a.m. PT on Saturday, Oct. 9. Championship matches will be played on Sunday, Oct. 10.
