PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - California women's tennis junior Jana Juricova earned a berth in the championship match of the singles draw at the 2010 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at the Riviera Country Club on Saturday, Oct. 9. The top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Golden Bear defeated fifth-seeded and No. 7-ranked Denise Dy of Washington, 6-1, 6-2, in the semifinal to run her set-winning streak to eight.
Juricova draws second-seeded and No. 2-ranked Hilary Barte of Stanford in the singles final on Sunday, Oct. 10. The match-up is the fifth time the two will face each other on the court as singles players. Barte owns a 3-1 record in head-to-head matches against Juricova, but the two split meetings last year, with the victor prevailing with a 6-3, 6-3 result. Cal has had three singles title winners at the All-American Championship. Susie Babos won back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007, and Racquel Kops-Jones claimed the crown in 2003.
As the top seeded doubles team in the tournament, No. 1-ranked Andersson and Juricova advanced out of the quarterfinal with a 9-7 win over USC's team of Valeria Pulido and Alison Ramos. Into the semifinal, the Bears drew Stanford's third-seeded and No. 3-ranked team of Barte and Mallory Burdette. The Cardinal tandem stayed the pace with Cal's duo, and eventually pulled away to earn an 8-6 victory for a berth in the championship match.
