TULSA, Okla. - No. 122-ranked California men's tennis sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt moved into the second round of the 2010 D'Novo/ITA All-American Tennis Championships qualifying tournament at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Monday, Oct. 4.
Konigsfeldt defeated No. 120-ranked Alexey Grigorov of Texas A&M, 7-5, 6-1, to advance and takes on No. 66-ranked Brennan Boyajian of North Carolina in a 7:30 a.m. PT match on Tuesday, Oct. 5. Boyajian holds one of the 17-23 seeds.
The Golden Bears had four players in the first round of singles qualifying, but were only able to send through Konigsfeldt. No. 123-ranked junior Nick Andrews dropped his first set, 6-4, against Peerakit Siributwong of Oklahoma, but fought back to edge the Sooner with a 7-5 tiebreaker win in the second set. But Siributwong responded to take the final set, 6-3, to eliminate Andrews.
Sophomore Carlos Cueto also battled it out in a three-set match against No. 98 Dominic Hodgson of North Carolina State, but fell, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Senior Jonathan Dahan was eliminated by Auburn's No. 73-ranked Alex Stamchev, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round. All three Bears will take part in consolation singles matches on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Cascia Hall in Tulsa, Okla.
Dahan draws Dusan Miljevic of Georgia Tech and Andrews takes on Alex Pelaez of Illinois State in 7:30 a.m. PT matches. Cueto will face Ben Dunbar of New Mexico in an 8:30 a.m. PT match. The third round takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 6. The 16 winners will move into the 64-man All-American singles main draw. No. 17-ranked senior Pedro Zerbini is already entered into the main singles draw.
Andrews and Dahan hold the fifth seed in the doubles qualifying tournament and will face Jens Vorkefeld and Yannick Weihs of Denver in an 11:30 a.m. PT first-round match on Tuesday, Oct. 5. With a win, the duo will play again at 2:30 p.m. against the winner of a match between Sacramento State's team of Kiryl Harbatsiuk and Jason Smith and North Carolina's team of Zach Hunter and William Parker.
The round of 16 takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 6. The eight winning doubles teams will earn a spot in the 32-team All-American Championship doubles draw. Zerbini and Konigsfeldt are already in the main doubles draw as a duo. Please visit www.itatennis.com for complete information and results.
