STANFORD, Calif. - California women's tennis's No. 1-ranked and top-seeded doubles team of senior Mari Andersson and junior Jana Juricova earned a berth in the semifinal of the 2010 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championship on Monday, Oct. 25, at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The pair will face Stanford's seventh-seeded duo of Veronica Li and Stacey Tan at 9:30 a.m. PT, on Tuesday, Oct. 26.
Andersson and Juricova emerged from the quarterfinal with an 8-2 win over Cal Poly's eighth-seeded team of Alexa Lee and Amy Markhoff. The Golden Bears are the only non-Stanford team in the doubles semifinal. With a win over one Cardinal pair, they would face one of two Stanford tandems in the final. The fourth-seeded and No. 58-ranked team of Kristie Ahn and Nicole Gibbs, and Stanford's final tandem of Amelia Herring and Carolyn McVeigh also square off at 9:30 a.m.
In singles play, sophomores Annie Goransson and Tayler Davis each advanced to the quarterfinal. Eighth-seeded Goransson defeated 14th-seeded and No. 124-ranked McVeigh of Stanford, 6-3, 6-4; and 15th-seeded Davis moved on as Washington's top-seeded and No. 7-ranked Denise Dy pulled out due to injury after falling, 6-2, to Davis in the first set. Third-seeded and No. 16-ranked Andersson had trouble against Stanford's Gibbs in the round of 16, and fell, 6-0, 6-1.
Goransson ran into 13th-seeded Ahn of Stanford in the quarterfinal, where she had her eight-match winning streak snapped in a 6-0, 6-2 loss. Davis drew the seventh seed in No. 46-ranked Tan of Stanford, but was eliminated as she fell, 6-3, 6-0. Davis and Goransson formed the sixth-seeded doubles team in the tournament and went the distance against Stanford's Herring and McVeigh in the round of 16, but were denied in a 7-3 tiebreaker loss.
