STANFORD, Calif. - No. 16-ranked California women's tennis senior Mari Andersson topped a list of three Golden Bears that pushed through their first-round matches in the 2010 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championship on Friday, Oct. 22, at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. As the third seed in the singles tournament, Andersson received a first-round bye, but made short work of her match against Washington State's Rebeca Delgado as she breezed into the round of 32 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
Andersson draws Claire Soper of Saint Mary's College in the round of 32 at 11:30 a.m. PT on Saturday, Oct. 23. 15th-seeded sophomore Tayler Davis moved into the round of 64 with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Lea Jansen of Washington State. She will face Megan Heneghan of UC Davis at 11:30 a.m. in the round of 64. After a first-round bye eighth-seeded sophomore Annie Goransson will face Samantha Smith of Washington at the same time in the round of 64.
Juniors Stephany Chang and Catalina Visico were each eliminated in straight sets in the first round. Chang fell to Fresno State's Olga Kirpicheva, 6-0, 7-5, and Visico lost, 6-1, 6-0, to Patricia Skowronski of Oregon.
As the top seed in the doubles draw, Andersson and junior Jana Juricova received a first-round bye. The duo will take on Alita Fisher and Jenny Julien of Saint Mary's in the round of 32 at 10 a.m. Davis and Goransson also received a first-round bye in the doubles tournament. The sixth-seeded tandem will take on Oregon's team of Trudie du Toit and Rabea Stuckemann at 10:30 a.m. in the round of 32. Chang and Visico opened the doubles round of 64 with a bout against Vania Radunovic and Lina Xu, but the the Cal duo fell, 8-4.
