STANFORD, Calif. - Led, again, by No. 16-ranked senior Mari Andersson, the California women's tennis team moved two players into the singles round of 16 of the 2010 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championship on Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Golden Bears also send two duos into the doubles round of 16 after two days of play.
In the singles round of 64, eighth-seeded sophomore Annie Goransson earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Samantha Smith of Washington, and 15th-seeded sophomore Tayler Davis came from behind to take a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 decision against Megan Heneghan of UC Davis.
Davis went on to defeat Natalie Dillon of Stanford in the round of 32, 6-2, 6-2. Seeded third, Andersson blanked Claire Soper of Saint Mary's College, 6-0, 6-0. Davis draws the top-seeded player in the singles draw, Washington's No. 7-ranked Denise Dy, in the round of 16. Andersson will face 16th-seeded Nicole Gibbs of Stanford. Rains forced the postponement of several matches, including Goransson's. She will draw Alexa Lee of Cal Poly in the round of 32 at 9 a.m. PT on Sunday, Oct. 24.
In the doubles draw, Andersson was joined by junior Jana Juricova. The top-seeded and top-ranked Bear tandem defeated Alita Fisher and Jenny Jullien of Saint Mary's College, 8-2, in the round of 32 and will face Kelly Lamble and Maggie McGeorge of Santa Clara in the round of 16.
The sixth-seeded team of Davis and Goransson defeated Trudie Du Toit and Rabea Stuckermann of Oregon, 8-1, in the round of 32 and will take on Amelia Herring and Carolyn McVeigh of Stanford in the round of 16.
