Cal Doubles Move on at Bulldog Classic

FRESNO, Calif. - The California men's tennis team had two doubles teams advance at the 17th-annual Fresno State Bulldog Classic on the courts of the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center on Friday, Oct. 1.

The second-seeded doubles team of senior Bozhidar Katsarov and junior Tommie Murphy moved into the quarterfinals by defeating Stefan Dmitrovic and Quentin Mege of Nevada, 8-4, in the round of 16. They will draw UC Santa Barbara's team of Tayler Chavez-Goggin and Mathieu Forget at 8:30 a.m. PT on Saturday, Oct. 2, on the Fresno City College Tennis Courts for the right to move into the semifinals.

Senior Zach Gilbert and junior Sky Lovill teamed up to earn a spot in the semifinal as they took out Nevada's third-seeded duo of Wessim Derbel and Nathan Reix, 8-1, in the round of 16. The Cal pair then defeated Alex Bouillin and Evan Jurgensen of UC Santa Barbara in the quarterfinal, 8-2. They will face Aliaksander Malko and Javier Milan of Sacramento State at Fresno City College at 9 a.m. PT in the semifinal. The doubles final takes place at 9 a.m. PT on Sunday, Oct. 3, at the Wathen Center.

While successful in doubles matches, the four Golden Bears were unable to advance in singles play. Lovill battled Chavez-Goggin in the round of 32, but was barely edged in a 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 decision. Third-seeded Katsarov, Gilbert and Murphy each received first-round byes, but fell in the round of 16. Murphy gutted out a three-setter with Jean-Charles Diame of Fresno State, but was turned away, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. He will draw Sebastian Bell of Cal Poly in the consolation quarterfinal at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2.

Gilbert also went three sets but fell to fifth-seeded Drew Jacobs of Cal Poly, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Katsarov went up against Nick Papac of Fresno State but was denied a shot in the quarterfinal on a 7-5, 6-2 loss. Katsarov played his consolation quarterfinal match against Victor Ouvard of Nevada where he went down, 6-0, in the first set before Ouvard edged him out, 7-6, in the second set. Lovill will take on Dmitrovic of Nevada and Gilbert meets Kristian Kuharszky of Nevada in 10 a.m. consolation quarterfinal matches at Fresno City College on Oct. 2. The consolation semifinal takes place at 1 p.m. before the final returns to the Wathen Center at 10 a.m. PT on Sunday, Oct. 3.
