STANFORD, Calif. - California men's tennis junior Nick Andrews and sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt claimed the doubles title at the 2010 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championship on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The No. 29-ranked Golden Bears will receive automatic entry into the field of 16 teams in the 2010 USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Tennis Championships to be held at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., Nov. 4-7. As a team, Cal claimed the team trophy for winning the most matches of any participating team.
As the fourth-seeded duo in the doubles draw, Andrews and Konigsfeldt faced the third-seeded and No. 25-ranked team of Kyle McMorrow and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan of Washington in the championship match. The Huskies went up a break at 2-1, but were broken back to put the match back on serve. The Bears earned one more break late in the match to prevail with an 8-6 victory.
In the singles semifinal, fifth-seeded and No. 122-ranked Konigsfeldt went up against sophomore Carlos Cueto. The two Bears battled out a tough first set before Konigsfeldt took charge and held on for a 7-2 win in the tiebreaker. Cueto came back to win the first game of the second set, but had to withdraw from the competition due to an injury.
Konigsfeldt's win by default put him in the singles title match against the fourth seed, No. 75-ranked Kiryl Harbatsiuk of Sacramento State. Harbatsiuk took out the second seed, No. 46-ranked Alex Clayton of Stanford in three sets to advance to the final.
Harbatsiuk took the first set, 6-4, over Konigsfeldt, but the Cal sophomore replied to even the match with a 6-4 win of his own in the second set. Harbatsiuk had the edge in the third set, however, as he came away with a 6-3 win to claim the singles title and the coveted spot in the 32-man field of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships.
