STANFORD, Calif. - Three California men's tennis doubles teams earned berths in quarterfinal matches at the end of the third day of the 2010 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championship at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. Singles matches were postponed due to inclement weather conditions. Play will resume with the four doubles quarterfinal matches at 9 a.m. PT on Monday, Oct. 18, followed by the two semifinal matches no earlier than 10:15 a.m.
The singles draw will resume with round of 16 matches at 11:30 a.m. on Monday (Oct. 18). Singles quarterfinals will take place on the same day, not before 2 p.m. The semifinals and championship match will be played on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. respectively. The doubles championship match is also set for Tuesday at 10 a.m.
The Golden Bears had four teams in the doubles round of 16 and were able to move three into the quarterfinal with strong play in all matches. Cal's fourth-seeded and 29th-ranked team of junior Nick Andrews and Christoffer Konigsfeldt took an 8-4 win over Portland's Geoff Hernandez and Michel Hukwo to move on.
Senior Jonathan Dahan and sophomore Carlos Cueto upset Stanford's seventh-seeded team of Matt Kandath and Denis Lin, 9-7, and the Bears' tandem of junior Sky Lovill and sophomore Riki McLachlan upended Stanford's eighth-seeded team of Alex Clayton and Ted Kelly, 8-6, to advance.
Senior Bozhidar Katsarov and freshman Ben McLachlan also drew a Stanford pair in the round of 16. But the Bears were unable to overcome the Cardinal duo of Jamin Ball and Daniel Ho, as they fell, 8-6.
