STANFORD, Calif. - The California men's tennis team put three singles players and four doubles teams into round of 16 matches at the end of the second day at the 2010 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championship at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
In singles round of 32 matches, fifth-seeded and No. 122-ranked sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt continued his strong play as he took out Saad Benkirane of Saint Mary's College in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Sophomore Carlos Cueto defeated Oregon's Alex Ravello, 6-0, 6-2, to advance; and sophomore Riki McLachlan came back after falling behind by a set to defeat Washington's Tobi Obenaus, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. The three Golden Bears will play in round of 16 matches on Sunday, Oct. 17.
Cal had three more players in the round of 32. No. 123-ranked junior Nick Andrews was turned away in a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Lucas Tirelli of Saint Mary's College; senior Jonathan Dahan fell to Fernando Ristow of Pacific, 6-1, 6-1; and freshman Ben McLachlan fell, 6-2, 6-3, to the fourth seed in the tournament, No. 73-ranked Kiryl Harbatsiuk of Sacramento State. In singles consolation, junior Sky Lovill was eliminated by Washington's Martin Kildahl, 6-2, 6-2, in the round of 64.
Players went through two rounds of doubles matches on day two. The Bears' fourth-seeded and 29th-ranked team of Andrews and Konigsfeldt received a first-round bye and advanced to the round of 16 with an 8-2 win against San Francisco's Ola Bakke and Jacob Hartwig. Senior Zach Gilbert and junior Tommie Murphy came up with an 8-3 win against David Ayoun and Nick Papac of Fresno State in the first round, but the pair fell to the fifth-seeded and No. 35-ranked duo of Harbatsiuk and Marko Starkevic of Sacramento State, 9-7, in the round of 32. Senior Bozhidar Katsarov and Ben McLachlan; Lovill and Riki McLachlan; and Cal's ninth-seeded team of Cueto and Dahan each earned two wins to move into the round of 16.
