STANFORD, Calif. - The California men's tennis team put six players in the singles round of 32 on the first day of the 2010 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championship at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. After taking a first-round bye, fifth-seeded and No. 122-ranked sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt headlined a group of Golden Bears that won 10 singles matches with his 6-4, 6-0 win over Kevin Eischen of Gonzaga in the round of 64.
Three Cal players held 9-16 seeds including No. 123-ranked junior Nick Andrews, who defeated Santa Clara's Tom Pham, 6-4, 7-5, in the round of 64. Newcomer sophomore Carlos Cueto dropped just four sets as he advanced to round three with his 6-3, 6-1 win over Alex VanDerschelden of Portland State. Senior Jonathan Dahan held the last of Cal's seeds to receive first-round byes. He defeated Aliaksandr Malko of Sacramento State, 6-4, 6-4, to move into the round of 32.
As one of the 17th-seeds, freshman Ben McLachlan earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Keith Kamono of Santa Clara in the round of 128 before he dispatched of Portland State's Roman Margoulis, 6-2, 6-1, in the round of 64. Sophomore Riki McLachlan fought off San Francisco's William Schumacher, 6-4, 7-6, with a 7-2 win in the second-set tiebreaker to advance out of the first round. He then returned from one set down to take out Fresno State's Jean-Charles Diame, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Senior Bozhidar Katsarov came away with a 6-4, 7-6 win in the first round as he defeated Jackson Martin of Portland, 7-1, in the second-set tiebreaker. Katsarov drew a familiar foe as he faced off against ninth-seeded Thai Tu of San Francisco in the round of 64. Katsarov took the first set, but was edged in the second before Tu took the third for the win, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Junior Tommie Murphy won his opening match in a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Sho Higuchi of Oregon with a 7-4 win in the second-set tiebreaker; but was eliminated by Santa Clara's Kyle Dandan, 6-2, 6-2, in the round of 64. Junior Sky Lovill wasn't able to make it out of the first round as he fell to Fresno State's Sebastian Hafner, 7-6, 6-3. Lovill will enter the 64-man consolation bracket.
Play continues with the first round of doubles matches (64) at 9 a.m. PT on Saturday, Oct. 16. Singles round of 32 and doubles round of 32 matches will take place later in the day.
